The short name of the beacon

The short name of the beacon

For all babies the same problem arises: You have to find THE first name.

This beautiful baby

Fortunately, you helped me a lot. I received close to 400 proposals!

» see the full list

Words that came up often: drone, helicopter/gyro/copter, lark, dragonfly, R2D2…

Alouette, gentile Alouette

After reflection, I liked the name “Alouette”:

– The beacon becomes a small animal

– A bird, flying in the wind

– As the beacon looks like a helicopter, we could have paid a nice tribute to our friends from civil security. They owe us.

Problem: a small SME, "AIRBUS HELICOPTERS", registered the brand a long time ago. That I expected, for the helicopters at least. Unfortunately, the brand also covers scientific instruments and everything related to computing and data communications.

Even if probably these people will never bother me, I prefer to avoid problems. So it won't be Alouette. In addition, there are already plenty of Alouettes in Google.

Dragonfly

To stay in the world of small animals and insects, the dragonfly seemed nice.

But there are 3 essential rules in the internet jungle:

– You absolutely need a .com / .fr / .net or .org name. People who are not geeks do not remember weird extensions like .eu / .co /.io / .ht , etc… And here no luck: All libellule.com / .fr / .net / .org, etc are already occupied .

– You need a short and easy-to-remember name: No more lengthy crafts like mapetitelibellule.com.

– You need a name without any spelling ambiguity. Even if it may seem obvious, "dragonfly, is it with one or two Ls?" ".

A good internet address is rare, and it can be expensive. I know a man from Grenoble who sold yum.com for €50!!! But in the end it's not much when you know that pizza.com has traded for several million! As a result, specialized boxes buy all the interesting addresses, in the hope of reselling them with a big capital gain.

A smart guy bought libellule.net for 8€, and try to resell it for 3500 dollars. And so since I don't have 3500 dollars to spend, we'll find another name.

Pioupiou, the lucky winner

Finally, the cute always wins!

I really liked the idea of the little bird. And then unexpected stroke of luck, the previous owner of pioupiou.fr had not renewed the reservation of the name, which expired a month ago.

So the estate was in a “redemption period”. That is to say that it had already expired, but that the owner had a reprieve of one month to renew it.

So I just had to wait quietly for the domain to go back into the public domain to buy it at a ridiculous price.

This morning of April 5, around 11 a.m. it was won. The name was deleted, and therefore available again.

%% No entries found in the AFNIC Database.

A few clicks and a blue card later, it was registered again. I am the proud new owner 🙂

Incidentally, I registered the trademark at the INPI.

Apart from this nice but crisp gueguerre of the address, it is especially that I found the name too cool.

"pioupiou" reflects the personality of this beacon well: a tiny bird carried by the wind, which sings to tell us what it feels. It's so cute that we immediately want to adopt one. It gives a soul I think.

It is also the pioupiou who is very young at the beginning, and whom we will all help to grow so that he can fly with his own wings. Like this project, basically 😉

And then the addicts to social networks will obviously make the parallel with Twitter, symbol of the transmission of unlimited information and in real time. Moreover, it may well be that this "pioupiou" is able to Tweet the wind it makes.

We are far from MachinWind or WindTruc too cold and too tech. Phew, no one offered me “windcloud”. There are certain marketing buzzwords that make me want to kill 🙂

Now, all that's left is to find a logo… To your drawing boards!

This article tells you about the birth of Piou Piou, the first 100% autonomous and affordable sensor to measure the wind live, even where there is no electricity or internet.

  1. I think your experience is awesome! I'm following this adventure which seems to me to be on the right track to become a great success!
In any case, as soon as you have some available again with my association, we are ready to take at least one!

  2. It is possible that I will sell mine before I have it, because I still don't know if my location is covered: Fourchat (Rosans) E 5° 28'53.45152"; N 44°25'20.97863"
    We keep in touch?

  3. Personally, I find that pioupiou is too French, I understand that the current target is massively French-speaking, but suddenly we cut ourselves off from the market in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, etc. during future development of sigfox.
Many French companies have had their market eaten away because of this.

  4. My problem with pioupiou is its military connotation… and not easy to type as a name on a keyboard either. I know I'm late to complain 🙂 but hey, it's said.

    Courage!

  5. According to Trésor de la Langue Française (my favorite online dictionary) the word PIOUPIOU is traced for the first time in... 1661 "crie du jeune pousin"... The military connotation ("simple soldier") only dates from 1838. So no remorse, and fair winds to the "young chick"!

  6. Good evening, I would like to know if the average paraglider can consult the wind data of Pioupiou on a map according to its location and accessible on which link. Thank you in advance, because I understand that only those who have purchased Pioupiou can exchange their data.

    1. I'm having trouble specifying. There will be a map (soon) on pioupiou.fr.
Everyone will be able to view all tags.

The question of “reciprocity” concerns only a few specific cases:
There are a few existing weather networks (amateurs, farmers, Météo-France, airports, etc.). But the reuse of data is prohibited. For example, I don't have the right to put their stations on meteo-paragliding.
Tomorrow, we will have the largest wind observation network in France. These people will probably be interested in our stations.
But it would be unfair to let them freely dig into our data, if we ourselves do not have the right to use theirs. So the license of our data has a clause that forces them to open. So they will have the right to display their data plus ours on their site, and we will also be able to display their data plus ours on our site.
By doing that, we eliminate the notion of competition, and we all start working together to create a real public good.

Obviously, if someone doesn't have beacons, they still have the right to use the data.
